Chatsworth House
Chatsworth House (known as the ‘Palace of the Peak’) is one of England’s most famous stately homes which has been standing for over 400 years. The original building dates back to the 16th century, with construction beginning in 1553. Significant renovations and expansions have taken place over the centuries, shaping it into the magnificent stately home it is today.
It is also home for the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire having been passed down through 16 generations of the Cavendish family. Fortunately the Cavendish family is now happy to share its stunning architecture, extensive art collection, beautiful gardens, and rich history with visitors from around the world.
For those wanting to combine a visit with exercise, it’s possible to walk or cycle from The Old Vicarage B&B in Tideswell to Chatsworth House. The direct distance is 10 miles (16 kilometres) however most routes are likely to be 15-20 miles (24-32 kilometres) long depending on the choice of roads and paths and is likely take several hours to complete. If you then want to rest your legs on the way back you can catch a bus from Bakewell to Tideswell. There are several bus services operating between these two locations, such as route 173 provided by Andrews of Tideswell.
Surrounding the House are 105 acres of parkland and gardens designed by various renowned landscape architects and garden designers over the centuries. One of the most significant is Lancelot “Capability” Brown who developed the landscape, particularly in the area around the River Derwent. Also Joseph Paxton, best known for designing the Crystal Palace but who also designed the Emperor Fountain, one of the most famous features at Chatsworth. He also cultivated the Cavendish banana, the most consumed banana in the Western world. The gardens feature cascading waterfalls, sculpture-filled pathways, a winding maze, a Victorian rock garden, and an impressive collection of rare plants and trees. These open spaces are an excellent place to take relatively gentle walks.
Host Tip: "While the house is spectacular, the gardens are vast. If you want to avoid the biggest crowds, head toward the 'Cascade' early in the morning, then wander up to the Hunting Tower for a unique view of the estate that most tourists miss."
Inside Chatsworth is no less impressive. The rooms are filled with art collection, which includes works by Old Masters such as Rembrandt, Van Dyck, and Veronese, as well as many contemporary pieces including modern sculptures. A variety of events and exhibitions are hosted by Chatsworth throughout the year, ranging from art installations and sculpture displays to themed garden displays and seasonal festivities. Set apart from the main house is the former stable block that now contains various cafes and restaurants as well as shops selling souvenirs, gifts, books, and locally sourced products for visitors to take home.
